Tanzanian gospel minister Asagwile offers a deeply personal worship moment with “Umenibeba,” built around the Swahili phrase meaning “you have carried me.”
The song draws from a phrase embedded in East African gospel tradition, most notably through Pastor Tumaini’s earlier work. Asagwile’s version doesn’t borrow the sentiment lightly. It speaks to being carried through difficulty, and the vocal performance carries that weight honestly.
Asagwile has built a catalogue that includes collaborations with artists like Godfrey Steven, Obby, Japhet, Walter Chilambo, Elvis Gare, and Paul Clement. His range extends across worship, testimony, and praise, often moving between solo offerings and collaborative projects. He has released singles, remixes, and full projects including an album simply referred to as MTB.
“Umenibeba” is not a plea or a declaration of power. It’s a reflection on a path that required help, and the acknowledgement that something beyond the singer’s own strength kept him moving.
