Nigerian DJ duo and producers DJ Ozone (Turn Up) have released “Best Nigerian Old Highlife Mix,” a one-hour mixtape of classic Highlife and Jùjú records.
The mix gathers timeless sounds from some of the country’s most influential Highlife and Jùjú legends. Cardinal Rex Lawson appears through expressive songwriting and distinctive trumpet arrangements that shaped Highlife in the 1960s. Dr. Victor Olaiya, known as the “Evil Genius of Highlife,” features with horn-led compositions and a big-band style.
Sir Victor Uwaifo, the multi-instrumentalist behind the “Joromi” sound, adds another layer to the collection. King Sunny Ade represents the evolution of Nigerian Jùjú through intricate guitar work and talking drums. DJ Ozone (Turn Up) keeps the mix flowing across these different eras, so longtime lovers of Nigerian classics get a nostalgic listen. Younger audiences, however, get an introduction to important chapters of the country’s musical history.
