Ugandan singer-songwriter Joshua Baraka has joined forces with Nigerian star Tiwa Savage for “Commando”, a track sitting second on his “Recess II” project. Baraka produced the song himself, and that fits his working style because he writes and produces much of his own material. He also handled production on five of the seven songs from his earlier “Growing Pains” project, so the self-made approach carries over here.
The pairing itself carries weight. Tiwa Savage signed with Mavin Records in 2012 and later became the first woman to win Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards. She also released “This One Is Personal” in 2025. Baraka, meanwhile, broke through with “Nana” in 2023, and the remix pulled in Joeboy and King Promise. He has linked with Nigerian acts before too, including Skales on “Body on Me” and DJ Neptune on “Tonight.”
So “Commando” pairs a producer-singer from Uganda with one of Nigeria’s biggest voices. Baraka has also built continental links with Bryan The Mensah on “I Do” and Maya Amolo on “Bend It.” He even overtook Diamond Platnumz as East Africa’s most streamed artist on Spotify this year, going by monthly listeners.
