Kenyan rapper Kaa La Moto has gathered five East African voices on “Muhuni,” a Swahili hip-hop record built for the streets. The song pulls Femi One, Makamanda (Brown), Chid Benz and Masauti into one fold. That lineup alone explains why heads turned when the audio landed.
“Muhuni” is a cross-border collaboration between Kenya and Tanzania. Femi One and Makamanda (Brown) hold the Kenyan rap side, while Chid Benz carries the Tanzanian hip-hop weight. Masauti closes the circle with singing, so melody cuts through the bars. The title points at a hustler or street-smart character, which gives the record its rough edge.
Kaa La Moto has spent years in coast hip hop, and his catalogue moves between rap and Taarab-leaning sounds. He has also worked with Kalamashaka, so linking up with new voices is not new territory for him.
Rap leads here, but the vocal sections keep the mood warm. Each artist gets room to breathe, so nobody sounds like a guest on somebody else’s song.
