Boston R&B group New Edition delivers a slow-burning classic titled “Can You Stand the Rain” from their “Heart Break” album. The title sounds like a simple question, but it asks a lot of a couple.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced the album, so it carried a fresh, grown-up sound. As a result, “Can You Stand the Rain” showed how far the boys had come. The group released the record in 1989, yet many fans still call it their finest ballad.
Ralph Tresvant opens with a soft, sweet tone. He sings like a man testing the water before he commits, so each line feels careful. His voice carries a boyish charm, although the words sound mature.
The harmonies from the rest of the group add a second layer of feeling. Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe and Johnny Gill each give the hook a different shade. Their voices blend tight, and none of them rushes the moment. It’s tender and a little wistful.
Does Ralph Tresvant’s opening verse still hit you the same way today? Drop your thoughts in the comment section below.
