Abdelwahab Doukkali – Marsoul El Hob

Abdelwahab Doukkali – Marsoul El Hob

Moroccan singer Abdelwahab Doukkali’s classic love song “Marsoul El Hob,” translating as “messenger of love,” still draws attention decades after its creation.

The poet Hassan El Mofti wrote the words, and Doukkali composed the music in 1972. Singers including Hasna, Assala and Ragheb Alama have since covered the song.

The arrangement stays simple, built on soft strings and a gentle rhythm, so the words remain in front. Doukkali sings in pure Moroccan dialect in a calm, polished voice.

The lyrics have him asking the messenger of love where he has been. The plea is humble and sad, but never bitter, according to the source.

Because the language is plain, listeners far from Morocco can still follow the feeling. That reach may explain why so many artists keep returning to the song.
