Pop songwriter Billie Eilish gives “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” another listen, and the vocal pulls people back in.
The song is track four on Hit Me Hard and Soft. Billie wrote it with her brother Finneas, and the two spent close to a year on it. She nearly cut it, because she thought it was a bit silly.
Yet the delivery carries the weight. Billie has said the song held the highest belt of her career at that point. That note lands near the end, and it changes the whole mood of the track. The title borrows from the old proverb about birds of a feather flocking together. She sings about a love she wants to last, even past the grave. However, she has said she wanted it to feel a little toxic. Finneas added that the idea was to flip the usual song about dying for someone.
The record reached number two on the UK Official Singles Chart, while the US has it at four times platinum. It also topped Billboard’s Global 200 for three weeks, and it drew Grammy nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
A snippet appeared in the trailer for season three of Heartstopper, so the song found a second life on screen. Does the vocal still hit you the same way? Drop your thoughts in the comments below.
