American R&B singer Lloyd keeps his 2000s catalogue in rotation as his Lil Wayne-assisted love record “You” remains a steady slow-jam favourite. The song comes from his “Street Love” album and landed in 2007, back when Lloyd was one of the leading voices in Atlanta R&B. Lil Wayne was also at a peak, so the pairing carried real star power.
But the real pull here is the production. Soft keys float over a gentle drum bounce, while a warm bass rolls underneath. Everything leaves space, so the vocal gets all the attention. “You” never rushes, and that patience is the point.
Lloyd sings in a smooth, high tone with a bit of ache. His runs rise only when the emotion calls for it. Lil Wayne answers with a laid-back, raspy verse, swapping hard bars for charm and quick punchlines. The lyrics circle around desire and one woman who owns his full attention.
So the record works because nobody fights the beat. The hook ties it together, sweet and a little cheeky. Is “You” already on your old-school playlist? Drop your verdict in the comments below.
