Choncho – Mixtape Freestyle (WYFL Riddim)

Zambian rising act Choncho takes on the WYFL Riddim with “Mixtape Freestyle,” a cut under two minutes produced by T-Core. The beat comes from Jamaican producer DJ Mac and CrashDummy. T-Core handles production on this version, while the record stays tight and moves fast. It runs under two minutes, so there is no room for filler. That shortness works in its favour, because the riddim does most of the talking. “Mixtape Freestyle” arrives as the WYFL Riddim keeps spreading well past Jamaica. Vybz Kartel and Mavado share that riddim for the first time in years. Fabolous and Shatta Wale have also jumped on it, while Skippa’s WYFL carries the riddim’s own name. Canadian Tamil rapper B-Sav flipped it as Kavanam Riddim. A DJ Wass remix pack gathers Mavado’s Big Gvns and Masicka’s 20 Matic over the same beat. Choncho is billed as a rising Zambian artist, and a listing links his audience to the Copperbelt and beyond. The riddim has already travelled far, so a Zambian voice on it makes sense.
