South African producer DJ Jaivane closes out his Mended Pieces album with “Ibele,” a slow-building record that features Zem_sa on vocals. Luyanda Ndlovu and Zamani Siyamthanda Kubeka handled the writing and production, while the song arrived through Ziiki Media in mid-September.
The arrangement is the story here. Zem_sa’s vocals sit right at the front of the mix, but the instrumental holds back instead of crowding her. Nothing rushes. The groove settles in and stays put, letting the album breathe out rather than forcing one last climax.
That patience paid off with listeners. “Ibele” climbed to number five on Apple Music South Africa and was still holding at number ten weeks later. It also landed on the YouTube Music Top 100, so people clearly weren’t skipping the closing track.
For a six-minute and forty-two-second cut tucked at the end of a fifteen-track project, that run says a lot about how the record was built.
