Olivia Rodrigo turns the struggle to capture love in words into a meta-pop anthem with “stupid song,” from her third album.
The record arrived on June 12, 2026, and it builds its whole premise around a paradox. Rodrigo sings that she wants someone more than any stupid song could ever say, yet she is using a song to express exactly that. She explained the track was inspired by Annie Ernaux’s book Simple Passion, focusing on the madness and misery of longing rather than a simple happy romance. Dan Nigro and Rodrigo crafted a slow build that starts as a piano ballad before evolving into a post-punk-inspired burst of energy. That structural shift mirrors the emotional unraveling she describes, comparing herself to a thread coming undone and a car without brakes.
The writing carries “stupid song” because it refuses to resolve its own contradiction. A lesser record would pick a side, but this one lets the tension sit. The song also performed well commercially, holding the number one spot on the Billboard Global 200 in its second week and peaking at number three on the Hot 100.
