Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have joined forces on a new remix of “Expectations,” a record leaning into new wave and synth-pop. The remix marks Rodrigo’s first remix and Roan’s first guest feature, so it carries some weight for both artists. The original “Expectations” sits at track 12 on Rodrigo’s third album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.” This remix is the album’s fourth single, following “Drop Dead,” “The Cure,” and “Stupid Song.” Roan replaces the second verse with her own, joins Rodrigo on the hook, and belts ad-libs near the end. She also flips the lines to describe a mediocre female suitor, which gives the story a fresh twist. Roan told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe she likes adding her own spin to a song. The friendship behind the record runs deep, because Roan opened for Rodrigo on both the “Sour” and “Guts” tours. She also sang backup on “Lacy” and “Obsessed,” while both artists work with producer Dan Nigro. The “Expectations” remix keeps close to the original’s baroque pop and dance-punk leanings, yet Roan’s verse pushes it somewhere new. Bardia Zeinali directed a retro game-show video, with David Byrne appearing as host Johnny Johnson. Have you streamed “Expectations” yet? Drop your take in the comment section below.
