South African amapiano collective Piano City has released “Amalanga,” featuring Kelvin Momo, Thatohatsi, Major League Djz, Tracy and PYY Log Drum King. The isiZulu title means “the days.”
The record brings together artists from two sides of the amapiano scene. Kelvin Momo leads what the material describes as the deep, private school wing, while Major League Djz run the big stage side.
According to the release, the beat leans on a booming log drum and soft pads, with shakers and a round bass keeping the pulse. PYY Log Drum King’s name hints that the drum gets plenty of attention.
Kelvin Momo sets the mood with deep keys and patient drums, and the material states he lets the space breathe. Tracy and Thatohatsi handle the vocal side with smooth, sincere tones.
The lyrics seem to look back on good days and passing time, though the words stay simple. Because the hook repeats, the title sticks.
Five names could clash, yet the groove ties everything together. The record plays like a reunion of old friends.
