Fontaines D.C. return with “Happy For You,” a slow-burning breakup track that says one thing while clearly meaning something else entirely. The song lands on their fifth album, Dopamine Chamber, and it already had a live airing at Leeds Festival before the record even arrived.
Grian Chatten spends the whole song insisting he is happy for an ex, swearing it over and over, and that repetition is the tell. Nobody repeats a truth that many times. The arrangement opens stripped down, almost gentle, then builds steadily until the ending takes off entirely.
A Scotsman review called it a pretty tune with sinister sentiments, with Chatten walking the line between love and hate. The lyrics carry that split plainly. He shows up with flowers, then keys the car on the way out. He swears he will not run after her, then admits he wants her to know him more than anyone else does.
James Ford produced and mixed the track, while the Elysian Collective and Laura Moody handled string arrangements. Those strings are part of why “Happy For You” sounds bigger than a standard rock cut. For a band that has spent years turning post-punk into something grander, this one fits.
