Royal Messengers – Tshatha noPhakela

Maskandi group Royal Messengers return with a tribute record titled “oMama Bethu,” a song built around gratitude for mothers. The isiZulu title reads simply as “our mothers,” so the subject matter is clear before a single voice enters.

The group carries a deep catalogue behind them. Albums like Kwa-Nongoma Kungenhla, Sisemlandweni Nezwe Liyavuma and Dear Msakazi Iyangdina Lento sit alongside earlier projects such as Ama Agent, Lafa Ngathi and Sakhisizwe. So this is not a young act chasing a moment.

What stands out about “oMama Bethu” is the writing. The refrain thanks mothers for praying, working and holding families together. It pairs naturally with their earlier record “Kujabula Amadlozi,” because both titles reach for heritage and gratitude rather than trends.

Maskandi has always made room for songs about home. But few groups return to that well this directly. The hook stays simple enough to sing back at a family gathering or in a church hall, which is likely the point.
