South African traditional Maskandi group Amabongwa delivers a culturally rich body of work as they unveil new album “Kulomhlaba” for listeners. The attire-loving storytellers built a following on expressive Zulu narrative, so expectations around this project ran high before it landed.
“Kulomhlaba” carries a clear thematic weight, and the lyricism centers on surviving hardship in this world. The group also touches on reading people’s true intent, overcoming struggle, and holding onto resilience through constant challenges. Those poignant proverbs give the Zulu storytelling a familiar grounding.
What holds the album together is its flow. It runs in one continuous stream from start to finish, so the listen never drags. The acoustic-led production keeps pace with the group’s vocal energy throughout the runtime. Nothing here feels rushed or out of step.
For dreamers and traditional music lovers across generations, “Kulomhlaba” offers something steady to return to. It fits easily into a morning motivation playlist or a traditional appreciation queue. So the question is simple: does it meet what you wanted from Amabongwa?
