South African Gqom heavyweight Mr Thela returns with “INTSIKA (KING OF GQOM),” a 20-track album featuring Boohle, Eemoh, Vanger Boyz, Pcee and Campmasters.
The title means “pillar” in isiZulu. It stands for strength and support, and the producer says it reflects his experiences and his position within the music culture.
One of the songs that introduced the project was “uBumnandi,” featuring Eemoh and Vanger Boyz. Heavy percussion drives the record, while the rhythm keeps one foot firmly on the dancefloor. Eemoh also returns on “Sisuka’Kude,” so he becomes one of the recurring voices across the album.
Boohle joins Mr Thela on “uMhleli Wami,” but Pcee and Campmasters appear together on “Impilo Emnandi.” “Anthem” brings in Shella Weh Mngani and Mel Bacela, and “Khanya” gathers Borah RSA, Rhass, Lethu and Maleta on one recording.
Elsewhere, Lakhe Cruel Boyz handle “Cruel Combo,” and Asambeni joins the producer on “Departure.” That spread of voices keeps the twenty tracks moving without losing the drum-led sound he built his name on.
