Ochi War keeps traditional Igbo music in view as he returns with “Ndi M Ji Eme Onu,” an extended Ogene performance.
This is not the usual three-minute record. Ochi War lets the instruments and vocal chants carry the music instead. The result fits the kind of cultural gathering where music pulls people together.
He builds the recording around Ogene bells, Okanga drums and the traditional Oja flute. Those instruments give the song its unmistakable southeastern Nigerian character. His chanting also follows the call-and-response style common in indigenous Igbo performances.
“Ndi M Ji Eme Onu” sits as the second track on Ogene Okanga, Vol. 2. The project holds only two extended performances, with “Mirima Doo” opening the collection. According to its digital music listing, this second track runs for roughly 21 minutes and 20 seconds.
The title speaks to pride in the people one keeps close. It can also point to loyal friends who stand behind you. That message ties the performance to friendship, brotherhood and community.
