South African vocalists Lwah Ndlunkulu and MaWhoo unite as the Zulu Queens for debut album “Isithembu.”
The duo blends Maskandi with contemporary South African sounds across 14 planned tracks. However, the recording process faced a setback that forced a second pass. Instead of letting that derail the project, they used the extra time to refine the songs and strengthen the overall record.
Maskandi star Mthandeni SK reportedly gave the pair their Zulu Queens name and inspired the collaboration. Yet the title “Isithembu,” which translates to polygamy, became part of their playful campaign. They jokingly called themselves the “first wife” and “second wife” of the album.
This project brings a fresh female perspective to a genre traditionally led by male artists. So the production leans into that contrast, mixing traditional instrumentation with modern arrangement choices.
